This gyudon recipe is a favorite quick go-to weeknight recipe. Gyudon might be one of my ultimate comfort foods: soft and tender thinly sliced steak simmered in an uber flavorful stock, served on fluffy white rice. It’s no wonder that in Japan there are several fast food chains that feature this iconic Japanese dish.
Once you gather your ingredients, it’s a breeze to make: bring a mix of dashi, soy, sake, mirin, and sugar to a simmer, add onions and beef and you’re good to go. Don’t forget to make rice before you start everything else :)
Gyudon: Japanese Beef and Onion Rice Bowl Recipe
serves 2, generously
- 3/4 cup dashi
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons sake
- 2 tablespoons mirin
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 pound thinly sliced chuck or rib eye
- 3 cups cooked short grain Japanese rice
- thinly sliced green onions, if desired
- toasted sesame seeds, if desired
In a saucepan, heat up the dashi, soy, sake, mirin, and sugar over medium high heat until gently simmering. Add the onion and cook, until soft and tender, about 2-3 minutes. Add the thinly sliced beef and simmer until the beef is cooked through and is no longer pink. Remove from the heat and serve, in a bowl over hot fluffy rice. Top with green onions and toasted sesame seeds if desired.
Japanese food never ceases to amaze me. And neither do your blog recipes.. :D Loved the photography and the presentation!
